The Bald Children

There were two of them - lying side by side and very comfortable in the air-conditioned environment. The shaven heads were the most prominent characteristic and I must say it made them look a bit like monks. The doctor was attending to them. He was teaching a group of medical students. The parents of the fatter child stood by and listened intently on every word of the doctor. The doctor was confident. They were hopeful their son will recover from the terrible tumour sticking to the bone of the leg.

The other child was also bald - a malay boy. He skinny in comparison but was nonetheless rather cheerful. He stared at the commotion caused by the teaching group and was making faces at the fatter boy. The fatter boy being of a polite and playful nature responded with a more elaborate face. They were both oblivious to the seriousness of their condition. Both were stricken with the most spine-tingling disease ever known to mankind - a disease that wrecks havoc around the tissues and your body can't do no nothing about it because it cannot kill cells that belong to themselves. Cancer is the worse thing that can happen to a person.

I must add that there is little consolation in the knowledge that these aren't the worst of all cancers either.
